Thanet Roadrunners celebrate great year
Thanet Roadrunners celebrate great year

The culmination of the 2017 athletic season saw Thanet Roadrunners AC celebrate their annual awards evening on Friday 16th February at the Clubhouse at Thanet Wanderers Rugby Club, Broadstairs.

Over fifty club members attended the evening with a whole host of awards given out including club championship awards, cross country awards, individual awards and the traditional Chairman’s and Secretary’s awards.

For a first time, there was a President’s award which was awarded to Jon & Jo Holl for their outstanding work in delivering the Kent Coastal Marathon & Half Marathon so brilliantly over the last couple of years. The Secretary’s award went to Claire Greenaway for her fantastic work as Women’s Captain and behind the scenes club work. The Chairman’s award went to Bradley Cameron who has literally rewritten the clubs record book over the last year.  Bradley Cameron won the marathon shield and another shield for best marathon time which David Winch had held for twenty-five years

In addition, Claire Greenaway (shown in picture with Club President, Derek Sackett) also won the award for top ladies’ cross-country runner with the Men’s award for this discipline going to Jo Scott.  Ultra-athlete extraordinaire, John Hunt amusingly won the 5K handicap award.

Special award winners were also given to:

1/ Achievement trophy “For dedication and strong running in 2017” – Karen Moys.

Awarded because she is such a strong supporter of the club and her fellow runners.  Karen is a modest runner who just gets on with her training.  Last year she completed the Folkestone 10, Mount Ephraim 10k and two SVN marathons last year.  She is also happy to change her routine to support others with their training – so much so that she has entered a marathon in June this year, as she’s doing the training anyway to help those preparing for the Norway Marathon!

2/ Merit Award, for “Outstanding commitment to running in 2017” – Shelley Rowe.

Awarded for her incredible athletic achievements over the last 12 months including completing a couple of SVN marathons, a 15-mile LDWA walk, a half marathon and our Thanet 10 last year, Shelley also completed 28 park runs and knocked 9 minutes off her previous PB.  This weekend she beat her PB again by 17 seconds (25.36)!

3/ “Best Supporting Role 2017 – Steve Clarke”.

For everything, he does for the club and its members.  He truly upholds the ethos of the club and is so supportive of the club generally and any individuals who need help, advice or support.

Lastly, three Certificates were award as a “Triple Crown” to John Hunt, Pam Phlipot and Bob Wild by Thanet Roadrunners AC for their determination, intent and resilience in overcoming the mental and physical challenges to complete endurance events many club members would not even consider entering.

The list of the club championships winners who were awarded their trophies at this presentation night is as follows.
