Gemili’s Olympics ends in tears

Kent’s Adam Gemili saw his Olympics end in tears after suffering injury on Tuesday morning.

His competition ended before it had even begun during the 200m heats on Tuesday.

It was noticeable that Gemili had his right thigh heavily strapped as he lined up in the blocks.

And the 27-year-old from Dartford pulled up immediately after the gun went off, limping away as the others sprinted off.

Gemili was in tears as he walked around the bend and back to the finish line before speaking about what happened.

“I can’t believe this has happened. I am in so much pain,” he told BBC Sport.

“In my last block start before I went into the cool room and I just felt my hamstring go.

“I just said strap it up and let me go out there and try, because you have to try.

“I felt like I had such a good chance as well. I have been training so well. This season has been really up and down and I had finally put together five to six weeks of solid work.

“It’s just s***. Excuse my language, I’m really sorry but it’s the worst feeling in the world.

Gemili missed out on bronze at the Olympics five years ago by just three thousandths of a second.

He was set to be a part of GB’s 4x100m relay team, with the heats beginning on Thursday.

But his withdrawal from the 200m with a hamstring injury suggests he won’t compete.

And it continues what has been a devastating Games for Team GB sprinters on the track.

Dina Asher-Smith was left in tears as she confirmed a hamstring injury sustained earlier in July meant she would not be able to compete in the 200m.
