Dartford sprinter Adam Gemili warmed up for the Olympics in style cruising to victory in the final of the 100 metres at the World Junior Championships in Barcelona.

The British sprint sensation recorded a remarkable time of 10.05seconds, a championship record and a personal best for the 18-year-old in his fledgling career.

His time was 0.12secs quicker than Aaron Ernest from the United States while Jamaica’s Odean Skeen came third in a time of 10.28secs.

Gemili, who has been selected for the 100m and 4x100m at the Olympics, had earlier ran his then-third fastest time by clocking 10.18secs in the semi-final but his performance in the showpiece event is sure to make heads turn.

Christian Malcolm in 1998, Mark Lewis-Francis two years later and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey in 2005 have all matched Gemili’s feat.

But much is expected of the youngster, who beat his previous best of 10.08secs in a low-key race in Germany last month with a phenomenal run in the same Montjuic Stadium that Linford Christie won 100m gold at the 1992 Olympics.
