Champions crowned at Truck Racing Finale

The Truck Racing finale brought the curtain down on the Brands Hatch centenary season’s headline events in spectacular fashion last weekend.

With the annual firework displaying  closing out the blockbuster weekend of entertainment on and off the circuit, wowing the crowds who gathered to watch them.

David Jenkins has been crowned as this year’s British Truck Racing Champion in front of a sell-out crowd at Brands Hatch, with two races to spare. ‘Jenks’ celebrated the title by standing atop his MAN TGX cab after a hard-fought drive to fifth in the first race of Sunday morning.

Jenkins set up a potential shot at the crown in the third to last race of the season with two exemplary wins on Saturday but he would have to start from the fourth row of the grid while rival Stuart Oliver lined up on pole.

Oliver did everything he could, leading away from the front and fending off a spirited challenge from John Bowler to take the victory. Crucially a mid-race red flag caused a restart, effectively striking Oliver’s fastest lap from the record books. That point, which could have helped to keep the title fight alive instead went to Bowler who set the best time of all during the five-minute dash to the flag.

Behind that, Jenkins was separated from the top two by Nathan Smith and Michael Oliver, but fifth was just enough to guarantee a first BTRC crown since 2011. Two races remain to run this afternoon and the Division 2 title fight between Jake Evans and Callum Eason will continue.

In the Division 2 class, the title fight also went down to the final day, and in this case the final race. It was Callum Eason who prevailed, defeating Jake Evans in a reversal of the previous season’s decider at the same venue.

The meeting also saw the TCR UK Championship come to a close, with Callum Newsham taking the title after winning the last race of the season, fending off Maximus Hall to do so. In the Pickup Truck Racing Championship, it was Allen Cooper who was crowned as champion.

But at this event like no other, there was so much else for fans to enjoy beyond that. This included illuminated funfair rides into the evening, plus a not to the circuit’s past as a rallycross venue with a display and demonstration.

Then, as is traditional, the show trucks took to the circuit for a glowing twilight convoy before the sell out crowd counted down to the fireworks display and rockets took to the night sky.
