300 not out for Birley at Brands Hatch
300 not out for Birley at Brands Hatch

‘Legend’ is the only word that you can use to describe Rod Birley who made history on Easter Sunday taking his 300th victory at Brands Hatch.

It is a quite incredible achievement for the local racer, as he took victory in the first of two CMMC Super Saloons & Production Saloons races during the British Truck Racing Championship weekend.

This latest milestone comes during a career which spans multiple decades, and during which he’s won more races than any other British racing driver. Appropriately, the victory came at the wheel of the trusted Ford Escort WRC Cosworth in which he’s done so much winning at Brands Hatch during the modern era.

The crowning achievement was celebrated at the end of the race, at which point Birley was presented with a special commemorative trophy by Brands Hatch Circuit Manager, Mike Lally.

Birley followed up his victory in the final race of the weekend with another to take his Brands Hatch tally to 301.

Speaking after receiving his trophy, Birley said: “That was the longest race I’ve ever done. It started to get to me a little bit yesterday as we had a few issues with the car. Really, really pleased though. We had a bit of an issue with a wheel bearing and when you’re racing you feel every knock and bump!”
