Zyro becomes the forgotten man
Zyro becomes the forgotten man

There was much excitement when Charlton signed talented Crystal Palace winger, Sullay Kaikai, and Michal Zyro on loan during the January transfer window.

Kaikai has yet to show the kind of form he did at Shrewsbury in his previous stint in League One, while Zyro has become the forgotten man.

He was sidelined with a long term injury after joining Wolves, but he seemed set to make an immediate impact at The Valley.

Here’s what Karl Robinson said about his new recruit prior to the postponed Blackpool game at the end of January:

‎”One of his main two objectives was to try and get Charlton to the next level, and his next one is to get to the World Cup in Russia.

“It just shows you the level of player whose job is to assist someone like Lewandowski, which just shows the quality of the players he’s mixing with.

“He trained really well on Tuesday, he certainly looks in good shape, I’ll make that decision tomorrow whether I go with him or not (at Blackpool).

“We did a speed test on Tuesday, and he’s quick. He’s over six foot and has a power to him, for a big man he has a good touch, and I’ve watched him a few times and he was flying before he had his injury.

“He was hitting that level in the Championship, so you’d like to think he’d have even more of an influence in League One whilst he builds his confidence up.”

So it seemed Zyro was ready to play, and he was brought on for the last 20 minutes against Oxford at The Valley at the beginning of February.

But since then, Zyro has had little involvement – he came on for the last six minutes against Bradford last month, and was a last minutte substitute against Shrewsbury.

Robinson was asked about Zyro’s chances of starting the Oxford game and said this:

‎‎”Don’t forget Michal had a really bad injury and had not played for two years.

“We don’t feel he is quite ready yet to start‎ but there is still a lot of football to be played.”

The Addicks gave a run out to four senior players – Nicky Ajose, Johnnie Jackson, Lewis Page and Jason Pearce – at Watford on Monday evening. The quartet are all likely to play some part at Peterborough on Saturday.

But there was no place for Zyro. The game would have been an ideal opportunity to get some minues into him, and improve his match fitness.

Nicky Ajose is now back in the fold and appears to have leapfrogged Zyro in the pecking order.

Like Joe Dodoo before him, it appears that Zyro does not really figure in the manager’s plans.
