Wright poised for Gillingham exit

Josh Wright and Gillingham have mutually agreed to terminate his contract, according to Sky Sports.

The midfielder enjoyed a sensational 2016/17 campaign, netting 14 times in all competitions after being deployed in an attacking midfield role for the first time in his career.

Sky Sports News are reporting a fallout between Wright and manager Adrian Pennock has led the 27-year-old to ask for his contract to be terminated at the League One club.

It is understood the fallout occurred a number of weeks ago and their relationship deteriorated due to broken promises over a potential exit from the club.

Pennock left Wright out of his matchday squad for Saturday’s 3-3 draw against Southend United, with Wright later denying claims he had refused to take his place on the bench.

“It’s not for me to go into it right now but just remember always two sides to stories etc but yes I was fit and available today that’s it,” Wright said on Twitter.

“As said I can’t say much but all I will say is I DID NOT REFUSE TO BE ON THE BENCH.”

Wright, who has attracted interest from a number of Championship sides this summer, had 11 months remaining on his contract and becomes a free agent.

He has made 119 appearances at Championship level for Charlton, Scunthorpe and Millwall.
