Wrexham 3-0 Bromley
Wrexham 3-0 Bromley

In the first game since the sacking of Manager Neil Smith Bromley fell to a 3-0 defeat away to fellow play off chasing side Wrexham, as they were taught a lesson in taking your chances.

Interim managers Alan Dunne & Roger Johnson shuffled the pack ahead of the match switching to a 3-5-2 formation, with Byron Webster returning from injury to the centre of defence, while Kory Roberts, James Alabi and Charlie Wakefield were all left out completely.

The Ravens started well and could have gone in front early on when Joe Kizzi headed a Frankie Raymond corner over the bar from close range. Chris Bush’s long throws caused Wrexham some problems and Liam Trotter and Raymond both had efforts from range that were just off target, before Taylor Maloney had a driven effort well saved by Rob Lainton.

For the first half an hour Bromley looked the better side, but then the home side took the lead on 31 minutes with their first real chance.

A Young corner from the left was flicked home by the head of Jordan Davies who out jumped the visiting defence and directed the ball just inside the far post.

Young went close himself soon after and The Red Dragons went 2-0 up eight minutes later when a long ball from Taylor French down the right caught Bromley flat footed and Dior Angus was given loads of space to catch the ball sweetly on the half volley and beat Mark Cousins from ten yards out to double the Wrexham lead.

Bromley had a great chance to pull one back when Jack Bridge crossed for Courtney Duffus, but the striker blazed over from six yards out.

Late on Cousins made a good save low down to his right to deny Jay Harris palming the ball round the post for a corner, but the home side looked very comfortable at 2-0 up.

The second half saw Wrexham start well, Angus went close after collecting another ball down the left and Davies fired over after a mix up in The Ravens defence, before Bromley had a chance when Bridge set up Michael Cheek who hit the side netting from a tight angle.

Top scorer Cheek missed another great opportunity soon after when he latched on to along a ball over the top, but clipped the ball over the bar when well placed in the area.

Bromley were then made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal when Kwame Thomas flicked on a long ball to Angus who crashed his volley past Cousins and in off the far post for 3-0.

Angus had an effort saved from a similar position only minutes later as Wrexham attacked down their right again, before the striker was denied his hatrick when he was subbed after he had been booked for an angry reaction to a late challenge from Bush.

Bromley had one more chance late on when Liam Vincent set in a dangerous free kick from the right which found Trotter, but the midfielder’s powerful header came back off the far post.

The final chance of the game fell to the home side, but Luke Young’s dipping free kick from range just went over the bar.

Wrexham, who moved up to fifth, were worth their three points, Dean Keates’  side having weathered the early storm from Bromley before taking their opportunities in front of goal.

The Ravens, who slipped to ninth, now have a week before their next game at home to Wealdstone on Good Friday to re-group and maybe appoint a new manager.
