World Championship showdown for Conway

FIA World Endurance Championship title leader Mike Conway will take to the track at Bahrain International Circuit this weekend as the championship embarks on a double-header of races, culminating in the World Championship finale in just over a week’s time.

This weekend’s Bapco 6 Hours of Bahrain will kick off the double-header and marks the first event since Mike’s triumph at the illustrious 24 Hours of Le Mans in August.

Mike took an emphatic victory around the Circuit de la Sarthe, with the #7 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing squad taking a commanding hold of the race to win the event with a two-lap advantage over their nearest rivals.

Stepping back into the GR010 HYBRID this weekend, Mike and his team mates Kamui Kobayashi and José María López, will aim to consolidate their championship lead – which they currently hold by nine points from the sister #8 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing crew in second.

The 5.412km Bahrain International Circuit has become a staple of the WEC calendar in recent years. Hosting two events in the 2019-20 season, the circuit doubles up once again 2021 to bring the season to a close.

The first of the two events will run to a six-hour duration throughout the day whilst the season finale will extend to eight hours, and finish under the floodlights in the Bahraini desert.

“After a short break, I’m excited to get back behind the wheel this weekend. It’s unusual for us to have a double-header in WEC, particularly to end the season. It means we need to be as sharp as ever as these two weekends will decide the championship. I’m feeling really good heading into it, Le Mans is still fresh in the memory and we’re all going to carry that momentum with us.”
