Woking 2-0 Welling United
Woking 2-0 Welling United

Having been knocked out of the F.A. Cup by defeat at Woking earlier in the season Welling United suffered the same fate when they met again in the Vanarama National League South.

In the first half Woking pressed Welling high up the pitch to frustrate them as they tried to play their football and it was only dead ball situations that caused problems at either end.

Toby Edser shot wide for Woking before Matt Patterso

n spun and fired over after Josh Hill had headed back a John Paul Kissock free kick.

Thierry Audel was booked for a foul just outside the penalty area but Edser’s low free kick went beyond the far post.

Audel then got involved at the other end when meeting Arnaud Mendy’s cross but Craig Ross made an easy save.

Twenty-three minutes were on the clock when the hosts went ahead. A miss-hit free kick was sliced across his own goal by a Welling defender allowing Jack Cook a simple header to put the hosts ahead.

That goal summed up much of the first half. Jamar Loza had a shot beaten out by Dan Wilks and after a big scramble Christian Jolley volleyed over.

Edser fired another free kick wide before John Paul Kissock delivered one at the other end that Danny Mills headed towards goal. It was cleared off the line but it wouldn’t have mattered as the flag was already up for offside.

Just before half time, Edser had one more chance but Wilks was down quickly to save.

After the break, Bradley Goldberg had a free kick beaten out by Ross but Audel was flagged for offside as he attempted to follow up.

Steve King made a double change just after the hour and changed the shape of the team. From then on Welling had the better of the exchanges.

Danny McNamara went on a great run but his shot was blocked out for a corner. Gavin McCallum delivered, Audel headed back and Brendan Kiernan tried an overhead kick that flew just over.

Mills then fired over after more good work by McNamara then a McCallum free kick picked out Hill whose header came back off the inside of the post.

Another Hill header was parried out to Ross as far as David Ijaha but he fired over.

Against the run of play, Woking made the points safe with seven minutes remaining when Greg Luar’s shot clipped a defender’s foot and looped up and over Wilks and into the net.
