Wilford targeting top five in 2021
Wilford targeting top five in 2021

Sam Wilford will take to the track for his first full season with the AGR Team and he is excited to get going.

Wilford joined the team in September 2020 and immediately started to gel with the team.

Speaking about how the deal came about, Sam said: “I had contacted the team after running as a privateer in their European Moto2 championship. I found it hard to fight inside the top 10 with lack of knowledge and still learning the tracks.

“So I got in touch with AGR who were at the time only running one bike in Moto2 to seek the possibility of riding for them. Before I knew it we were at Aragon for the second to last race where I scored my best result of the season which was 7th.”

It was clear that for Sam and the team they were a good fit from the start and it has helped him develop as a rider.

He added: “For sure it has helped me learn much faster through their knowledge of setting up a bike, bringing on young riders and having everything you need as a rider to perform.

“Also in the team we have a rider coach who is at the race weekends and tests to help improve my riding. All these small things add up to make a significant difference that you need to fight at the sharp end of CEV.”

In October Wilford achieved his best results of the season at Aragon in October and that highlighted to Sam, he had the potential to challenge.

He said: “Yes it was great to get some personal test results straight after joining the AGR team. Aragon is a long and difficult track, so it was great to find the settings we needed early on to achieve these results.

“Yes sure, I only run two races this with the AGR team but in that time I learnt a lot. I’m hoping to carry the momentum from last season into this season.”

For 2021 Sam is continuing with the team and Moto2 in the FIM Respol CEV Championship, and he wants to be challenging from race one.

He added: “The plan will be to try and get some solid results at the start of the season and regularly be in the top five throughout the season. It would be great to make the podium this year, but the competition is tough again. It’s great to have the team around me though to give me the opportunity to be able to fight for top the five and the podium.

“It’s great to have the continuity with the team as I know everyone from last year and we can continue where we left off. Also the bike is the same as last year which is nice. For 2022 the series will change the triumph engines to follow with the regulations of the world championship.

“As I said before I would be really happy to be fighting inside the top five and if we manage a podium that’s great. The goal for this year is to keep progressing and learning. I’m really excited to start testing and get this season under way!”
