Who next for The Gills?
Who next for The Gills?

With just the one game left in the League One campaign for Gillingham, the question all fans want answering is who will be their new manager?

Just a week after Steve Lovell was surprisingly sacked as manager after just eighteen months in charge, having kept the club up for the past two seasons, there is still a vacuum at the club with Mark Patterson and Ian Cox taking charge of team affairs ahead of the last game of the season at Blackpool.

With Chairman, Paul Scally, tight lipped over the future of direction of travel within the club, speculation is mounting as to who will replace Lovell in the long run.

Patterson has shown no real desire to take on the manager’s job despite being fourth favourite with some bookmakers.

One man’s name that keeps coming up is Steve Evans with rumours that the former Peterborough United boss linked with taking on a Director of Football role at Priestfield.

His long term assistant, Paul Raynor, has been tipped as the favourite by many bookmakers and could be a name that many Gillingham fans wouldn’t be aware of.

A combination of Evans and Raynor therefore seems a real possibility with Evans having watched a number of Gillingham games in recent months.

Having decided to step away from the manager role at Margate, former Maidstone United boss Jay Saunders is another name linked with the vacant position, but may not be many Gillingham fans’ choice having been in charge of their local rivals.

Other names linked with the position include former Gillingham midfielder and now Newport County boss, Michael Flynn, with Ian Hendon, Martin Allen and even Andy Hessenthaler all tipped by some bookmakers on returning to Medway.
