After two shocking results, it was no surprise that Guy Luzon’s contract was terminated.

Paul Gallagher dominated the midfield when Preston came calling on Tuesday evening. On Saturday, Brentford’s movement and midfield control won them the game.

Lee Carsley used a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Alan Judge superb in the advanced midfield three, while Alan McCormack was the lynchpin in the holding duo.

Things change quickly in football as the past week has demonstrated. At the beginning of the week, in an interview with the South London Press, CEO Katrien Meire effectively gave Luzon a vote of confidence.

By Tuesday night, Meire chaired a hastily called board meeting, presumably to discuss Luzon’s future. Rumours that Luzon had one game to save his job were proven to be correct, the Israeli had his contract terminated within two hours of the final whistle on Saturday. David Martane and Damian Matthew also lost their jobs.

The Addicks have a small squad and have been hit with more than their fair of injuries, so to lay all the blame at Luzon’s door would be wrong.

But he did make some strange decisions, Tuesday’s midfield quartet for instance. He did not seem to have the tactical nous required for the Championship, and he was not a man who liked to watch future opponents.

There have been persistent rumours of fall outs with certain players.

Luzon leaves with a Championship record of 10 wins, 9 draws and 14 defeats, but it is the current run of taking just 2 points from the last 9 games that brought Luzon’s tenure to an end.

With Martane and Matthew also leaving, it has to be assumed the club has an plan that they can put into place immediately.

Malky Mackay was in the Directors’ Box for the Brentford game, sparking speculation that he was going to be installed as the new boss.

Mackay seems an unlikely choice, Roland Duchatlet is known for appointing coaches he knows and trusts, Mackay does not fit that template.

Another question is would a British manager be prepared to work for a club where he can not bring in the players of his choice?

One person who could bring in the players he wanted would be the person entrusted with the club’s recruitment.

Ideally, that person would have knowledge and experience of working at The Valley. Such a man exists, and he told fans in the Spring of 2014 that he would return to be in charge of the club within two years.

He had success in his spell at The Valley as Jose Riga’s assistant, a role he came close to filling again under Luzon. That man is Karel Fraeye.
