Middlesex batsman Robbie White is hoping his side can push for a win in their Bob Willis Trophy game against Kent, despite the first two days being heavily disrupted by rain.

White, who ended day two not out on 36, was the star of the show for the visitors, who reached stumps on 123/6, and wants to kick on on day three.

“It was good to be out there for a while and spend a good amount of time at the crease” he said, speaking at the close of play.

“It was pretty tough going. With the lights on and overheads for the most of it, you have to accept the bowlers will be on top for most of the day. But I thought we fought pretty hard – it was a shame to lose a couple of wickets in the last five overs or so, and we are probably a bit behind the game, but we fought hard for most of the day.”

Almost 120 overs have been lost in the match so far due to rain. Attempts will be made to make them up, but a draw is now looking the likely result in a game where both sides could really do with the win.

“It is not easy” said White, 24. “Their bowlers probably got a good rest this afternoon and they were probably keen to get miles in their legs after that.

“It is about switching on and off and for a while we thought we were going to be done for the day because of the rain. But the ground here drains really well, and once the rain stopped Jack [Davies] and I were just trying to switch back on to the game situation and get ready, and that is all you can do really.”

Conditions throughout the game have favoured the bowlers, with Kent’s seam attack getting plenty of assistance.

The same will go for Middlesex when it’s their turn to bowl, though, and White is hoping that could swing a result in his team’s favour.

“It is a bit of a grind to be honest” he said. “I managed to battle out there and it was nice to go in at the end of the day not out. But it is probably only a start and hopefully tomorrow, batting with guys down the order, we can try and put some valuable runs on, because I think batting on that wicket with a bit of weather it could be tough for them as well.

The aim is to get the win – but it will be tough.

“It is probably a bit above my pay grade!” White joked when asked what the plan is for day three.

“It looks like there will be a bit of weather around again in the next couple of days which is frustrating but there is definitely enough in the wicket. It showed today – I thought they bowled really well – and it’s all about if we can out pressure on them with the ball when it comes to that.

“It is going to be tough with only two days left to try and force something, but we’ve got to go all out when we get a chance with the ball, so we will have to make early inroads and bowl them out cheaply.

“That is probably our only way of forcing something from here.”
