Individual mistakes again proved costly as Welling United crashed at Weymouth in the Vanarama National League South.

In the early stages, the Wings looked lively and James Alabi thought that he had opened the scoring when heading home Maxwell Statham’s cross at the end of a good move only to discover that he had been flagged for offside.
Gene Kennedy had a shot blocked for corner then Finn Ballard-McBride went on a long run before it ran just ahead of him and the Terras goalkeeper Will Buse was able to come out and made a block challenge.
Against the run of play, Weymouth’s first corner was half cleared and came out to Brooklyn Genesini. He wasn’t closed down and hit a spectacular effort into the top corner. Euan Pollock then flicked a header wide from Brandon Goodship’s free kick before Welling came close when Buse made a diving save to keep out Dave Winfield’s header from Daniel Martin’s cross.

More disappointing defending cost Welling again on the half hour mark when they conceded a needless free kick. Goodship’s delivery was defended poorly and Jake McCarthy had the time to pick his spot and fire home from close range.
Two minutes later, Welling pulled one back when Jayden Davis and Daniel Martin combined well down the left before the former chipped it into the middle and Alabi headed home from close range.
Although, the Wings continued to enjoy the best of the first half, they were unable to create another opportunity and went in at the break a goal behind.
Statham made a great block to keep Diamond Edwards out at the far post before Weymouth went further ahead eleven minutes into the second half. Goodship delivered a free kick that Welling goalkeeper Dylan Berry fumbled, and Josh McQuoid stabbed home from close range.
It could have been worse for the Wings when Ben Greenwood sent in a diagonal cross that Jordon Thompson failed to tuck home from close range before Welling missed a great chance. Alabi and Martell Taylor-Crossdale combined well down the right hand side before the latter squared to Zain Walker who squared high over when well placed.

That miss proved costly as the Terras scored again shortly after. Riccardo Di Trolio was deemed to have fouled Pollock in the penalty area and McCarthy converted from the spot, via the inside of the post.
Three minutes later, the hosts added a fifth when it fell to Genesini out wide and he struck an incredible effort that flew into the top corner.
As the game approached the closing moments, Genesini was thwarted by a brilliant save from Berry before Winfield made a superb last ditch block to keep out Malachi Linton.
Rod Stringer, Welling’s manager, will need to lift his team quickly as they have another big game ahead of them when they host St. Albans City next Saturday.
