Weston-super-Mare v Welling United preview

On Saturday, Welling United travel to the South West coast when they visit Weston-super-Mare.

It will be the total opposite of Welling’s last game. In that one they hosted top of the Vanarama National League South team Woking and now they visit the team who are currently at the foot of the table.

After scoring a 94th minute winner at Oxford City on the previous Tuesday, Woking took an unlikely point back from Welling with a very late equaliser. Despite again being down to bare bones, Welling took the game to their visitors and burst into a two goal lead thanks to a spectacular brace from Thierry Audel.

Although, Woking pulled one back soon after, Welling kept pushing and scored an excellent third through the in-form Brendan Kiernan shortly before half time. Welling seemed well in control until Reise Allassani scored with a wonder strike with fifteen minutes remaining. Even then it appeared that it would be no more than a consolation but Allessani scored again from close range as the game moved into injury time.

Dropping two points didn’t affect their league position, partly due to Weston picking up an excellent point in a two-two draw at Chelmsford City. The Seagulls went in two-nil down at the break but pulled one back immediately after the break through Matt Bower and levelled with twenty minutes remaining through Marlon Jackson.

That was their first match under caretaker manager Mark McKeever following the mutual consent departure of previous boss Marc McGregor. Another recent success was a two-one win at Torquay United, the Devon club’s first home defeat since Gary Johnson took over in September.

As a result, Welling manager Steve King is well aware of how tough the challenge is likely to be. “There’s no difference between playing teams from the top and teams from the bottom.” he said. “We will have to put in a professional performance.”

They will have David Ijaha back following his two match ban but Danny Mills has one more game to serve and Craig Braham-Barrett will miss the game on international duty. With Jordan Gibbons and Lanre Oyebanjo both out it will be interested to see what King does for cover.

When they mat earlier in the season, Welling won three-one but Weston played some excellent football and didn’t make it easy. Ijaha gave Welling an early lead before Tom Llewellyn scored an equaliser from forty-yards.

Matt Paterson put Welling ahead two minutes later but they didn’t add a third until injury time when Nassim L’Ghoul rounded Luke Purnell to slot home.

Two good footballing teams, both needing the points, look set to put on an intriguing game.
