Welling win London Senior Cup final

Mo Bettamer’s goal was enough to earn Welling United their first silverware in six seasons against Brentford B.

Although only three players who had started for the Wings on Saturday were in the first eleven for the London Senior Cup Final, they were good value for their win.

In the early stages, the young full time team looked dangerous. Dan Wilks made a good save from Theo Archibald and Joe Hardy’s shot was deflected.

At the other end Luke Rooney’s free kick was headed wide by Josh Hill.

Jan Zamburek tried to catch Wilks out but his shot from forty-five yards flew over before Welling missed a great chance. Craig Braham-Barrett and Nassim L’Ghoul combined to create space for Rooney to whip in a cross but Bettamer headed wide.

Archibald was well off target for Brentford then Hardy shot across the face of goal.

As half time approached Welling went ahead. L’Ghoul crossed from the right and Bettamer headed against the bar. It came down and bounced back up and he was first to it to head home.

Wilks ensured that Welling held their lead going into the break when saving first from Fredrik Hammar before pouncing on Hardy’s follow up.

After the interval Welling had the first chance when good close control by Montel Agyemang allowed him to lay it off to Rooney and his rising drive was deflected over.

Rooney again came close when Zack Newton gave him the opportunity to force his way through the Brentford defence but his poked shot at full stretch went wide.

Richard Orlu won a high loose ball and headed forward, Bettamer headed on and substitute Brendan Kiernan got on the end of it but he was off balance and blasted well wide.

Henrik Johansson fired Brentford’s only real chance of the second half across the face of goal but nobody was on hand to touch home.

Brentford tried to up the pace in the closing minutes but Caden Genovesi and Orlu made brave blocks to ensure that it was Welling who lifted the cup.
