Welling United return home for a midweek game sandwiched between two long Saturday trips on Tuesday night.FOOTBALL (WELLING HOME)

Although they put in an excellent performance at Grimsby Town over the weekend, they returned home empty handed from Blundell Park. For good periods of the game, they dominated but two defensive lapses were punished and at the other end, they failed to take some decent chances.

Next Saturday they have another early start as they head to Wrexham. Before that though, they have a midweek game against Braintree Town.

If there is any club that proves that part time clubs can compete against those who train full time and have big budgets, then Braintree Town is that club. Last season Alan Devonshire’s team were close to making the play-offs despite an extraordinary fixture pile up.

On Saturday, they added Bristol Rovers to their list of former league club scalps and will come into the game at Park View Road brimming with confidence.

In April they visited Park View Road and left with the three points courtesy of a Kenny Davis brace. Davis is their leading scorer this season having already notched four times.

Jamie Day has already started looking at ways to change his squad. Afolabi Obafemi departed and Charlie Gorman, Malik Ouani and Rod Young have all gone out on loan. It now appears that Lee Butcher is also leaving to concentrate on work outside football. The funds that have been released have allowed Day to bring back Aristide Bassele on a one month loan from AFC Bournemouth and he should be available for selection against the Iron.

Kieron St. Aimie limped off early on Saturday at Grimsby and must be questionable for the Braintree game. Day, who was outstanding against the Mariners, will be hoping that Joe Healy will be ready to return. Jamal Fyfield came off the bench against his former club and will give Day options at the back.

Over recent years, many of Welling’s most memorable performances have come under the Park View Road floodlights and with three home midweek games this month, Day will want to see his team get some victories under their belts.
