Welling United vs Truro City – Preview

Hopefully, it’s back to Vanarama National League South action for Welling United on Saturday when they host Truro City.

This week, both teams were due to play midweek fixtures but neither game went ahead due to frozen pitches. Welling were due to visit Farnborough whilst Truro were planned to host Dartford so the ground-staff will be working hard to get the J. Hearnden Skip Hire Community Stadium pitch fit for the game.

Last Saturday the Wings entertained Chesterfield in the F.A. Trophy. David Kamara put Welling ahead against the young Spireites team seven minutes after the break and Enoch Muwonge, who only started due to the eleventh hour withdrawal of Adam Roscrow, scored Welling’s second with just six minutes remaining. The Wings’ reward for progression is a home game with Barnet.

It will be the second meeting between Welling and Truro this season. On the opening day of the season. The Cornish team, who are playing their home games in Plymouth at present, shocked the Wings with five goals in the first half. Rocky Neal, Ed Palmer, Adam Porter (twice) and Tyler Harvey scored the goals.

Cameron Green had given Welling a glimmer of hope with a goal after Truro’s third, but the contest was over before half time. Although Antony Papadopoulos, Welling’s only starter not making his debut, scored from the penalty spot with three minutes remaining, it was barely a consolation for Danny Bloor’s shell shocked team.

Away from home, Truro have won six, drawn three and lost five. That included wins in their last three games on the road, at Dover Athletic, Torquay United and Weston-super-Mare. However, they come into the match off the back of a heavy home defeat. Worthing enjoyed a Saturday afternoon in Devon last Saturday, winning four-one.

As it is Truro’s first season back in the league following promotion last season, they haven’t visited Park View Road since January 2013. Loui Fazakerly put Welling ahead in the eighth minute in that game but three goals in six minutes from the twenty-sixth minute put Truro in the driving seat. Keiffer Moore (two), and Andy Watkins scored the goals.

Joe Healy scored a penalty just after the hour mark to start the Wings’ come-back before Ross Lafayette levelled with seven minutes remaining. Welling threw men forward looking for the winner and they were rewarded when Anthony Acheampong scored a last minute winner.

Roscrow should be available for Saturday’s game so the performances of Kamara and Muwonge against Chesterfield will give Bloor choices up front. Also, Joe Ellul is awaiting his debut having been cup-tied last weekend so there are also decisions to be made at the back.
