Welling United vs Burgess Hill Town – Preview

Following two games on the road, Welling United are back at home tomorrow when they entertain Burgess Hill Town in the Isthmian League Premier Division.

Defeat at Eastbourne Borough knocked the Wings off the top of the table so they will be looking to return to winning ways against another team based in Sussex.

Last Saturday, Eastbourne came into the game brimming with confidence having won their previous eight matches in all competitions, however, the game against Ryan Maxwell’s team was a very tight affair. Neither side was able to create more than one clear cut chance. Josh Rees hit a great strike from the edge of the area to score for the home team. Welling’s opportunity fell to leading goalscorer Nahum Melvin-Lambert who struck his volley cleanly only to see goalkeeper Lewis Carey get down to make a stunning save at the bottom corner.

In their most recent outing, on Tuesday evening, Burgess Hill beat Dulwich Hamlet at home. Joel Daly put the Hillians ahead with a deflected shot midway through the first half. Ben Pope, their long throw specialist, scored the hosts second on the hour mark with a well directed header and they cruised home from that point.

That victory moved them up to eighth place in the league table having collected seventeen points from ten matches with four wins, five draws and one defeat. While they were winning on Tuesday, Lewes were enjoying victory at Cray Wanderers to push Welling down to third in the table. The Wings have twenty-four points from ten games with eight wins and three defeats. They still boast a one hundred percent home record with six wins from six games having conceded just one goal.

Last season’s corresponding game between the Wings and Burgess Hill at Park View Road ended in a victory for the visitors. Martyn Box put them ahead just before half time after Welling had missed a one on one chance. However, the hosts equalised three minutes after the restart when Hamish Morrison turned a Leo Young cross into his own net. Jack Meeres scrambled home the winner for the Hillians with eleven minutes remaining.

Maxwell will still be without goalkeeper Mackenzie Foley and defender Louis Ramsay. Other than that, he should have the rest of his squad at his disposal and may give striker Chris Harris a full debut following his appearance as a substitute at Eastbourne.
