Welling United vs Aveley – Preview

Following defeat in their Isthmian League Premier Division curtain raiser on Saturday, Welling United host Aveley under the floodlights on Tuesday evening.

Lee Martin’s team travelled to Cheshunt for the club’s first ever fixture in the league and fell to a four-two defeat. They created a good number of chances over the ninety minutes, and were probably the better side in the second half. However, they were playing ‘catch-up’ by then having gone in at the break three-one down and Martin will know that when defending, they didn’t cover themselves in glory.

All sixteen of the players used by Martin were making their league debuts with Ruben Shakpoke and John Ufuah already off the mark for the season. Cameron Andrews, the only player left from last season, has gone out on loan at Erith Town so all of the participants against Aveley will be playing their first home league games for the club.

Their guests, Aveley, were also relegated last term and started their campaign on Friday with a one all draw at home to newly promoted Brentwood Town. Ollie Peters put them ahead on the hour mark but they had to settle for a point when former Miller Charlee Hughes levelled with two minutes remaining.

Last season at Park View Road, Welling and Aveley met on the first day of the campaign and the Wings prevailed courtesy of a Martell Taylor-Crossdale wonder strike. In the return fixture, a late Elliott Long goal salvaged a point for the Wings after David Kawa had put the hosts ahead.

Both teams will be looking for their first win under their respective new managers as the clubs seek to put last season behind them.
