Welling United v Worthing preview

Following their season opener at Taunton Town, Welling United host Worthing in their first Vanarama National League South game of 2022-23.

Last Saturday’s game in Somerset was the first time that the Wings and Taunton had ever met, and this week’s game will be the first ever competitive tie between Welling and Worthing.

Playing newly promoted sides isn’t always ideal as they come into the early games with momentum and full of hope, but Warren Feeney’s team showed the hard work and spirit not to come away empty handed.

On a sweltering day, and with nine players making their Wings league debuts, they might have gone behind shortly before half time, but Myles Roberts made his first big save for the club. However, Welling grew stronger as the game went on and finished the game on top.

It took Worthing under five minutes to score their first National League South goal. New signing Jake Robinson, the league’s all-time record goal scorer, notched his first goal since joining from Dartford.

Visitors Dover Athletic responded well and levelled when Lee Martin marked his debut with a goal eight minutes before the break. There was no further scoring.

Feeney will have learned a lot about his starting eleven last week and has a strong squad so there may be further debuts against Worthing as he looks for the winning formula.
