Welling United v Woking – Preview

On Saturday, the club with the best home record in the National League South entertains the best away team as Welling United hosts Woking. At the start of the week it would have been third versus second but games played on Tuesday night resulted in Woking going top and Bath City leap-frogging Welling into third place.

After scoring a 94th minute winner at Oxford City on Tuesday, Woking will be full of confidence but Welling also recorded an excellent victory, three-one at Wealdstone who were previously unbeaten in 2019.

Having arrived at the ground with just fourteen players, including Nassim L’Ghoul who was back following over two months out so short of match fitness, they suffered a further blow when Julien Anau pulled up in the warm up.

When they fell behind to a penalty in the fifteenth minute they might have folded. However, Steve King’s team are made of sterner stuff and Montel Agyemang had already hit the bar before they levelled on the half hour. Brendan Kiernan’s shot went in via a goalkeeper and a defender.

After the break Bradley Goldberg put Welling ahead with an excellent goal then Anthony Acheampong’s header came back off the inside of the post. Wealdstone also hit the woodwork before Kiernan made the game safe in the closing minutes.

They will have Arnaud Mendy back following his one match ban and L’Ghoul should be ready to play a more prominent role.

It will be the third meeting between the two teams this season as Welling have twice travelled to Surrey this season. They lost one-nil in the F.A. Cup in October and two-nil in the league in January.

Woking’s last defeat was at Dartford, the second part of a league double that the Darts inflicted on them in February. Since then they have gone three games undefeated while Welling have played five since their last loss. All is set up for an exciting encounter.
