Welling United v Tonbridge Angels preview

August Bank Holiday Monday sees an intriguing Kent derby at Park View Road when Welling United entertain Tonbridge Angels.

Both teams are feeling their way into the season, Welling with a new manager and new squad and Tonbridge in their first season back in the National League South following promotion last season.

A point, that could have been three, at Chelmsford on Saturday suggested that Welling are heading in the right direction. Having taken the lead through an excellent Bradley Goldberg goal crafted by Nathan Green, they were pegged back by a last minute Shaun Jeffers equaliser.

Meanwhile Tonbridge got off to a perfect start against Havant and Waterlooville with a fourth minute Tommie Hession-Harris goal. However Jonah Ayunga levelled four minutes later and further goals from Nicky Bailey and Andy Drury before half time ensured that the Hawks held on to their unbeaten record, the only one remaining in the league.

In their six games so far, Welling have won two, drawn two and lost two. Their home form was the best in the league last season but their fortress has been stormed once this time around, by Bath City.

Six games for Tonbridge have yielded one win, one draw and four defeats. Their one away point was recorded at Bath!

Both teams announced loan movements prior to their games on Saturday. Welling’s Julien Anau has gone out on loan for four weeks to Margate. However, the Angels have signed a player for the same time period. Ade Yusuff, a former loanee at Welling, has come in from Dulwich Hamlet hoping to add some fire power to a team that has only scored four goals in six games.
