Welling United v Tavistock AFC preview

After claiming their first league away win of the season, Welling United return to F.A. Cup action with a third qualifying round game at home to Tavistock AFC.

Their visitors started their campaign in the Extra Preliminary round with a three-nil victory over Hengrove Athletic before beating Frome Town from the league above, two-one in the Preliminary Round. In the first qualifying round they were again drawn at home but were held to a three all draw by Shepton Mallet before winning the replay two-one.

Another BetVictor Southern League South team, Highworth Town, were the next team to visit them and the Lambs rocked them with a four-nil victory to earn their place in the third qualifying round and a trip to Welling.

Mark Goldberg’s Welling side eased into the third qualifying round with a seven-nil victory over Chipstead Town from the BetVictor Isthmian South Central side. Adam Coombes and Bradley Goldberg each bagged a brace and Danny Waldren, Anthony Cook and Jack Jebb were also on the score-chart.

Last Saturday Waldren and Cook were again on target in Welling’s two-one victory at Hungerford Town with both goals assisted by Coombes. The one negative from that game was the loss of Gavin McCallum to a hamstring injury. However, their squad should be bolstered by the return of Josh Oyinsan and Jay Rich-Baghuelou from minor injuries and Dquame Copeland from a month on loan at Lewes.

The Lambs won five-two at Keynsham Town in a Toolstation Western League game last Saturday for their fifth consecutive league and cup victory but the run ended on Wednesday night when they were beaten by Wellington in another league fixture. This was just their second league and cup defeat of the season.

Goldberg confirmed that they will not be taking their opposition lightly and has had them watched. “We certainly won’t be underestimating.” he said. “How can we possibly think that we have a divine right to beat these sides? We’ll be taking them extremely seriously.

“I’ve heard people say ‘Oh, that’s another seven-nil.’ I think that’s the most ridiculous statement ever. Whatever happens, it’s all about just getting through to the next round.”
