Welling United v Oxford City preview

Having got through the busy Bank Holiday weekend, Welling United’s walking wounded will be pleased to have a couple of weeks with no midweek game.

On Saturday they entertain Oxford City at Park View Road looking to build on their impressive performance on August Bank Holiday Monday but Oxford will have their own ideas having also had a very good result, beating Wealdstone 3-0.

Visiting Concord Rangers is a difficult task and when Welling went there on Monday, Concord were second in the league with a 100% home record and no goals conceded. That record was destroyed by a rampant Welling who won 5-0 with five different goalscorers.

Despite the fact that they have had difficulty in turning possession into goals in some matches, they are one of the league’s higher scoring teams and both Thierry Audel and Brendan Kiernan have four goals in seven games. When on top of their game some of their crisp passing and movement off the ball is a joy to watch

They will need to be on top of their game against Oxford who, like Welling have amassed eleven points from seven games. Ten of their points have been one at home, though, and their only away point was claimed at Weston-super-Mare. They lost at both Gloucester City and Woking.

Injuries are hampering Welling though. John Paul Kissock was the latest to join the list which already has Yannis Ambroisine, Jordan Gibbons and Richard Orlu. They were only able to name four substitutes at Concord and may need to bring Archie Johnson back from his dual registration at  Cray Wanderers.

There will be a familiar face in the Oxford squad on Saturday as they now have Ben Jefford in their ranks.

When the two teams met at Park View Road in March, the visitors helped themselves to three points against a lack-lustre Wings team. Rob Sinclair scored the opener for Oxford just past the hour mark but when Jamie Philpot levelled the Welling faithful hoped that the momentum would lift their tea,.

It proved to be a false dawn, however, as Sam Nombe soon restored Oxford’s lead and any nerves they may have had were calmed when Freddie Grant added a third with two minutes remaining.

Steve King’s team will be working on gaining a better result this time around as they look to cement a place in the play-offs zone.
