Welling United v Haringey Borough – preview

After claiming two draws from two tough away games, Welling United needed to make the points count with good results from the home games that followed.

On Saturday, they completed the first part with a 2-0 victory over Poole Town and they  completed two in a row with a 1-0 win over Whitehawk on Tuesday night.

In awful weather conditions, the game was far from a classic but Harry Phipps’ first half goal was sufficient to improve their current run to one defeat in nine games.

Now, placed in the top half of the table for the first time since they were relegated two seasons ago, they can take a break with the start of their F.A. Cup campaign.

Drawing a team from to leagues below them is as much as anyone can ask for but if they are expecting easy progress, they could be in for a shock. Haringey Borough have got off to a flying start to the season.

They are currently unbeaten in the Bostick North, in second place behind 100% AFC Hornchurch and have got through two rounds of the cup already, knocking out Premier Hitchin Town in the last round.

Both Welling players currently on loan from Colchester United have been cleared to play. Goalkeeper Dillon Barnes continues to impress and made a stunner of a save in the game against Whitehawk before Welling had scored.

Eli Phipps has also got off to a good start opening his Welling account with a debut goal against Poole Town and there is a possibility that he got the last touch on the goal against Whitehawk although it has been credited to namesake Harry.

At the same stage last season Welling travelled to Whyteleafe of the Ryman One South (now Bostick South). It took Welling seventy minutes to break them down when Adam Coombes headed home Lyle Della-Verde’s corner.

Whyteleafe had a couple of chances before being reduced to ten men. Rickie Hayles put the result beyond doubt when heading home another Della-Verde delivery.

That was a good professional Welling performance and manager Jamie Coyle knows that anything less this time around could prove costly for his team.
