Welling United v Halifax Town preview

Last Saturday, Welling United halted their bad run with a goal-less draw at home to Macclesfield Town.

FOOTBALL (WELLING HOME)

However, this one was a game they will feel they could have won and will be looking to get back into winning ways when they entertain FC Halifax Town this weekend.

Injuries have hurt Welling but they have not helped their cause as they have had more suspensions than any other club in the Vanarama Conference Premier this season. Joe Healy is the latest to sit out a match as he serves a one match ban for five yellow cards.

Two Welling players have been on England C duty this week. Harry Beautyman scored in a 4-2 victory over Slovenia Under 23s. Jake Gallagher played his part when he came on as a second half substitute.

Welling’s two loanee goalkeepers have also been away playing international football. Benji Buchel (AFC Bournemouth) kept a clean sheet for Liechtenstein as they beat Moldova last Saturday. Jonathan Henly (Reading) came on as a substitute for Scotland Under 21 in Switzerland on Tuesday. They were 1-0 down before he came on, and went on to draw one all.

Earlier in the season, Welling were well beaten at the Shay Stadium. Following a goal-less first half, Halifax scored three second half goals to repeat last season’s scoreline.

When the two teams met at Park View Road, Lee Gregory scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot following a foul that saw Blaine Hudson dismissed. Gregory enjoyed his games against the Wings having scored all three goals in the earlier meeting.

In thirteen games against a team from Halifax, Welling have won just once, a 6-2 victory at Park View Road in 1998, so they will be keen to improve on the record.
