Welling United v Fisher preview

Park View Road hosts F.A. Cup football on Saturday when Welling United take on Fisher.

For the home team, it’s the start of the campaign but for Fisher, it will be their seventh game.

In the Extra Preliminary Round, the Preliminary Round, and the First Qualifying Round they were drawn at home, held and won the away replays. They started with a nil-nil draw with Sutton Common Rovers but won the return fixture one-nil.

They then drew two all with Sittingbourne before shocking their Isthmian South East Division hosts with another one-nil win. Then, in the last round, they drew one all at home to Spelthorne Sports before trouncing them four-nil in the replay.

Although they are currently bottom of the South Eastern Counties Football League, they have only played five league games, drawing two and losing three, the most recent being a two-one defeat at Phoenix Sports.

Warren Feeney’s Welling team are one of the toughest teams that they could have had to play. The Wings are fifth in the National League South having won five of their last six matches. On Tuesday night they had to grind out a tough one-nil win at Eastbourne Borough. However, in their last home game they showed the other side of their game with a brilliant five-nil thumping of Oxford City.

Feeney has been in football long enough to know the risks that go with a ‘David versus Goliath’ fixture like this, and that anything other than one hundred percent commitment could give his team problems.
