Welling United v Chipstead preview

Having claimed one point in the last twelve, Welling United may be happy for a break from league action with an F.A. Cup game against Chipstead.

Although the visitors are from the BetVictor Isthmian League South Central division, Welling will not be taking this game lightly. Manager Mark Goldberg said “We will not be underestimating our opposition. We will be well prepared and we will be having our best possible team selected.”

To qualify for this game, Chipstead have already got through two rounds. Having been held to a goalless draw at home to Hassocks they prevailed three-two in the replay before going to Westfield where they had already lost in the league, and scored the only goal of the game two minutes before time. Since then, they have gone three league and league cup games undefeated so will come into the game in confident mood.

Recent form has not been good for Welling but the results have not told the full story. Last weekend, they hosted run away National League South leaders, Wealdstone, and lost partly due to a man of the match performance by Stones’ goalkeeper Aston Oxborough.

His brilliant first minute save from Adam Coombes set the tone. The visitors had a short spell of looking dangerous but they went ahead through a Welling defensive calamity and it was very harsh on the Wings when they conceded again ten minutes later.

Coombes pulled one back with five minutes remaining but Oxborough had the last word when saving from Aaron Cosgrave who had burst clean through.

Theo Widdrington made his Welling debut on loan from Bristol Rovers and is expected to be available to play in the cup. His central midfield partnership with Montel Agyemang showed a lot of promise but that did not stop Goldberg from signing another midfielder this week.

Danny Waldren has re-joined Welling after just over two seasons at Billericay Town and will be available for selection the cup game but may have to await his chance.

Reece Prestedge has left the club and has signed for Margate.
