Welling United v Cheshunt preview

Having started the season by playing the two sides who won promotion as feeder league champions, Welling United now entertain a club who has come up by winning a play-off decider.

Visitors Cheshunt upset the odds by winning at Bishop’s Stortford and Hornchurch to get into the National League South so Welling manager Warren Feeney will certainly not under-estimate them.

They have built on that by beating Hampton and Richmond Borough in their first game, followed by a tight two-one defeat at Dartford on Saturday.

Feeney’s Wings still await their first win as he looks to find the right formula. At Taunton, they endured a tough twenty minute spell but they finished the stronger and looked the more likely to win it but had to settle for a point.

Then, on Saturday they hosted Worthing, and found themselves three-two down in an open first thirty minutes. They conceded again in the second half and lost four-two, but they hit the bar twice so they have demonstrated that they can score goals and if they can cut out their defensive errors, they will soon start to win games.

There are players on either side who will be competing against their former club. Amadou Kassarate scored for Cheshunt in their play-off decider against Hornchurch but has now switched to the Wings.

Also on the scoresheet that day was one time Welling player Zack Newton. A scorer in the Bishop’s Stortford game was Rowan Liburd and he is already off the mark this season.

The game kicks off at 7:45pm and getting to the ground early is recommended as Welling will be hoping for another healthy attendance.
