Welling United v Chelmsford City preview

On Saturday, two teams with one defeat between them this season meet when Welling United host Chelmsford City in a Vanarama National League South fixture.

Although Welling started with a draw and a loss, they have won their last two league games and have moved up the fledgling league table.

Chelmsford are a point better off having recorded two victories and two draws.

Last Saturday, Warren Feeney named an unchanged team for the first time since he has been Welling’s manager and despite playing the last twenty-five minutes with ten men, they claimed an impressive come from behind victory at Hemel Hempstead Town.

They went behind in the second minute, controlled most of the first period, but then got sucker-punched with a second just before half time. Five minutes after the break the Wings pulled one back through a Stefan Payne penalty, and within another five minutes they scored twice more, through substitute Anthony Papadopoulos and Payne’s second.

Hopes of cruising to victory were scuppered when Taofiq Olomowewe was shown a red card and Myles Roberts was called upon to make a good save in the dying embers of the encounter to ensure that Welling claimed the points.

Chelmsford started the season with a draw at home to St. Albans City before winning at Slough Town, and at home to Weymouth. On Tuesday they travelled to Chippenham Town and contested a goal-less draw.

In last season’s corresponding game, Feeney’s first at Park View Road, Dipo Akinyemi scored the only goal, ten minutes before half time, and it may be another equally tight game on Saturday afternoon.
