Welling United v Braintree Town preview

Although unable to end their win-less run Welling United put in an improved performance on Tuesday night against Dulwich Hamlet.

In some of their previous games they have struggled to even register a shot on target but against Dulwich they gave their goalkeeper, Charlie Grainger, plenty to do.

Whilst goalscoring has been a problem, they have gone five league games without a point, their defence has been strong and they have conceded just three times in that period. Their last two games have ended goal-less and Welling manager Mark Goldberg knows that his team now leads to build on the two draws and start registering some victories.

On Saturday, they entertain Braintree Town who have just appointed a new manager following the departure of Glen Driver who, himself was only appointed in June. They have now promoted club captain, Jake Hutchings, as player-manager with experienced George Borg as his assistant.

Currently in seventh place in the Vanarama National League South, the Iron have a decent away record with four wins, one draw and four defeats. Their last trip on the road was an impressive three-nil victory at Hemel Hempstead Town so Welling can expect a tough challenge.

There will be an additional reason for Wings supporters to attend as a number of former Wings will be present and available for reminiscing before and after the game. Nigel Ransom and Ray Burgess both played over a thousand games for the club and the latter also spent many years as assistant manager.

Other players who are expected to attend are Gary Abbott, Neil Clemmence, Tony Reynolds (who played for and managed the club), Mark Hone (if not on duty for Radio Lincolnshire), Paul Sawyer, Ian Starkey, Colin Ford, Derek Somers, Kevin Corbett, Alan Rogers, Mike Rutherford, John Farley and Kevin Shoemake, who is making the journey south from the West Midlands, and maybe some others.
