Three points was the least that Welling United deserved for their dominant performance against Wingate and Finchley in their Isthmian League Premier Division encounter.

Even though they bossed the first half, they went into the break at one-all The Wings remained patient before scoring three times in eleven second half minutes then cruised to a straight forward victory.

Fumnaya Shomotun hit an early shot wide for the Wings before a combination of Charlie Grainger and the crossbar kept out a deflected effort by Sam Smith that had looped up.

Having started quickly, the Wings went ahead in the fifteenth minute. Smith delivered a low corner and Zak O’Keefe met it at the near post with a half volley that flew home.

Soon after, Welling thought that they had gone two up when O’Keefe sent Demaray Anyadike away down the right and he squared for Nahum Melvin-Lambert to slot home. Although he appeared to have timed his run well, the assistant referee thought otherwise and raised his flag.

There was almost a repeat of the first goal when the visitors again allowed O’Keefe to meet a low Smith corner at the near post but, this time, his effort went the wrong side of the upright.

Shortly before half time, and against the run of play, the visitors levelled. Ashley Nzala nicked possession and played it into the area. Scott Kashket’s initial effort was clawed out low by Mackenzie Foley, however, his follow up was forced over the line despite the best efforts of the Welling goalkeeper.

Early in the second period O’Keefe crossed and Lekan Majoyegbe headed over before a deep cross by Ryan Blackman picked out half time substitute Ryan Kingsford and his instinctive volley was kept out by an excellent reaction save by Grainger.

On the hour mark, Ryan Maxwell made a double substitution with Jamie Reynolds and Troy Howard replacing Smith and Shomotun. Reynolds raced over to the far side to take a free kick and curled it inside the far post.

Four minutes later, the contest was all but ended. Grainger was closed down by Bennett and he fired it past the goalkeeper and across goal for Kingsford to force home.

Two former Welling players combined in a rare sortie into enemy territory and should have pulled one back when Sam Cornish delivered a free kick and Jack Thomas lost his man only to skim his header wide.

Soon after Bennett hit a long shot that Grainger fumbled wide for a corner. Reynolds played it short to Kingsford and he passed it back opening the angle. Reynolds took full advantage to cross to the far post to an unmarked Bennett who headed home from close range.

It could have been more when Reynolds sent over another free kick and O’Keefe turned it just wide of the far post. Bennett had a further effort with a shot that was deflected past the post and, from Reynolds’ corner, O’Keefe headed over.

That was the end of the goal action and Maxwell can now prepare for another home game on Tuesday night when they host Cheshunt.
