Welling United 3-3 Bognor Regis Town

Despite only being able to bank one point, there was plenty of cause for Welling United optimism following their draw with Bognor Regis Town.

Having created very little in their previous game, Welling had many opportunities in this game and although their defence made some errors, they can be worked on and eradicated.

Their first defensive error came in just the ninth minute when Jimmy Muitt was allowed in behind the back four and his finish gave Dillon Barnes no chance in the Welling goal.

However, within four minutes, Welling had not only levelled but gone ahead.

First Connor Dymond’s corner invited player manager Jamie Coyle to head home his third goal of the season. Then Bradley Goldberg scored his first Welling goal with a crisp finish from twenty yards.

Ian Gayle had a header cleared off the line by Doug Tuck and mounted an immediate counter that was only ended by an excellent tackle by Goldberg showing his defensive attributes.

Somewhat against the run of play, Bognor levelled. Tuck got down the left hand side a little too easily before his cross was turned into his own net by Barnes.

Dan Lincoln made a good save from a fierce effort by Pierre Joseph-Dubois before making another stop, this time from Joe Healy, following a good header down from Tom Bradbrook.

Barnes saved from Bognor’s Tuck then Ian Gayle shot over for Welling before the half time whistle gave everyone a chance of a breather.

After the break Healy fired wide for Welling then Barnes saved with his legs from Ollie Pearce.

Gayle headed over from Coyle’s chipped cross before Joseph-Dubois picked up the yellow card that the referee had dropped and raised it before handing it back. Thankfully, card happy Jacob Miles saw the funny side of it and didn’t add the Welling player to his mounting list.

One way traffic followed as Dymond twice, Goldberg three times, and Healy all tried their luck so it was rather against the run of play when Bognor again went ahead.

Muitt was the provider this time with a cross that was finished by a stretching Pearce.

As had happened in the first half, Welling equalised immediately when Healy fired home from twenty five yards.

An almighty scramble in the Bognor area almost produced a Welling goal but Pearce made a clearance off the goal line.

However, Welling might have lost it right at the end when Barnes made a brilliant save from Harvey Whyte who had made space for himself.
