Welling United 1-3 Weymouth

Another defeat for Welling United has left them above the bottom two on goal difference only and could turn out to be Mark Goldberg’s last league game as manager.

Abdulai Baggie put visitors Weymouth ahead a minute before half time but when Anthony Cook levelled it looked like Welling might go on and win. However, Josh McQuoid put Weymouth back ahead from the spot and Jake McCarthy added a third in injury time.

Mark Childs saved well from Dipo Akinyemi in the early stages but McQuoid will be wondering how he didn’t put Weymouth ahead soon after when putting Jordan N’Galo’s low cross over from close range.

Dan Wilks saved from Baggie before Childs made another good stop from Akinyemi’s low drive. Then Gavin McCallum was off target from out wide for Welling before Jake McCarthy fired high over for the Terras.

Korrey Henry shot into the side netting when latching onto Rob Swaine’s tackle before Baggie broke the deadlock. He managed to wriggle past two tackles before firing low past Wilks just before the interval.

In first half injury time he almost scored again but his shot was headed off the line by Ejiro Okosieme.

Early in the second period, Cook sent a free kick across the face of goal as nobody was able to get the touch that would have turned it in then Childs made a low save from Cook after good work by McCallum.

Jay Rich-Bagheulou fired just wide from twenty-five yards before Welling scored a deserved equaliser. McCallum did well to pull back from the right and Cook fired low past Childs into the back of the net.

Chaos in the Welling penalty area ended when Josh Wakefield fired over but his next break forward was decisive. He broke into the penalty area and Swaine mistimed his tackle and brought him down. McQuoid put his earlier disappointment behind him by converting the penalty confidently.

Akinyemi had a shot saved comfortably by Childs then Wilks made an excellent one from N’Galo as the game headed towards the closing stages.

Nathan Green was thrown forward leaving Welling with three at the back and it almost paid off when he found Danny Waldren with a cross but he couldn’t get sufficient power on his header to beat Childs.

However, this did leave Welling susceptible to the break and they paid for it in injury time when Ben Thompson invited McCarthy to break and he finished with a good shot inside the far post.
