Welling United 1-2 Wealdstone

Defeat against Wealdstone ended Welling United’s unbeaten run.

Although they were far from their best, especially in the first half, truly awful refereeing meant it was a steep hill to climb to get back into the game.

Referee Jack Packman showed poor judgement from the beginning to the end and made many a controversial decision.

In the early stages, Welling looked sharp and Tom Bradbrook might have put them one up but failed to connect with Jeffrey Monakana’s inviting cross.

After that, Wealdstone took control and both Daniel Green and Shaquille Hippolyte-Patrick had wayward shots.

Mohammed Eisa then should have done better but headed wide from Green’s cross before Gayle headed wide from a Jack Jebb free kick.

Eisa missed another good headed chance from Edward Oshodi’s cross before they went ahead. Once again Green was the provider with a deep cross that Ryan Sellers turned in from a tight angle.

Bradley Goldberg was introduced for the second period but before he had a chance to get involved, Wealdstone were awarded a penalty that surprised even them. Jack Parkinson jumped with Eisa and there appeared to be nothing in it but the referee pointed to the spot and booked the Welling defender to add insult to injury.

Goldberg headed just wide from a Monakana before sending Bradbrook away but he missed when he should have done better.

If Welling’s task was tough it got even worse when they were reduced to ten. Ben Jefford made a challenge by the touchline that didn’t upset Wealdstone too much but the referee wasted no time in brandishing his red card.

Bradbrook drew a good save from Jonathan North with a firm header before the ten men reduced the arrears. Monakana provided the delivery from a corner that Parkinson met with a towering header into the back of the net.

Jamie Coyle and Goldberg saved but as Welling threw players forward they could have conceded again and Stephane Ngamvoulou should have finished the game but shot wide.

Another refereeing decision went against Welling with five minutes remaining when Christian Nanetti was fouled in the penalty area but nothing was awarded.

Joe Healy and Parkinson were both off target from distance before Daniel Fitchett’s shot for Wealdstone came back off the post in the fourth of six additional minutes.
