Welling United 1-2 Slough Town

Brad Quinton’s Welling United revival was halted with a home defeat against a well organised Slough Town team.

Dan Roberts put the visitors ahead midway through the first half but Cameron James levelled six minutes before the break. Although Slough went for it in the second period, Welling appeared to be coping until giving away a needless penalty that Roberts converted.

Nathan Green returned to the first team and made an early important intervention when blocking Dan Roberts’ shot on the line.

At the other end, Anthony Cook’s deep free kick found James but he couldn’t find the target with the angle against him then Cook’s first touch allowed him to break the defensive line but his second was too heavy and Jack Turner was out sharply to claim.

Ben Harris had a shout for a penalty refused before Welling came close when Dipo Akinyemi did well to create a chance for himself but it dribbled inches wide of the far post.

Matthew Lench delivered the corner from which Slough went ahead. Harris got his head on it and flicked it on, Lee Togwell headed it further onwards and Roberts got on the end of it to nod home.

Dan Wilks then got down well to make a good save from Harris before Welling levelled. James shot from out wide and his shot evaded Turner and found its way inside the far post.

After the interval, Lench found space for a shot but fired just over before George Wells had a long shot turned over by Dan Wilks then headed wide from the resulting corner. Togwell had a shot turned wide by Wilks then his brother, Sam, headed wide from Lench’s corner.

Fifteen minutes remained when the Rebels regained the league. A ball over the top caught Harold Joseph out and as he scrambled to get back, he handled and a penalty was awarded. Roberts stepped up and although Wilks went the right way, he had no chance with the firm shot.

Although Quinton threw on Korrey Henry and Brad Goldberg, only Cook’s thirty five yard free kick required Turner to save and he did so in relative ease as he pushed it over.
