Welling United 1-2 Farnborough

Another disappointing home performance extended Welling United’s woeful run of results.

Although Farnborough scored the winner with almost the last kick of the match, Welling were second best until the last fifteen minutes and the result was a fair reflection overall.

Ricky Holmes’ shot early on almost squirmed under Kai McKenzie-Lyle, but he managed to stop it from crossing the line.

He had another scare when claiming a high ball. Realising that his momentum was going to take him out of the area, he had to release it. It fell to Selim Saied who tried to lob the retreating goalkeeper, but he could not get sufficient elevation and McKenzie-Lyle claimed it above his head.

Nearly half an hour had passed when Farnborough went ahead. Oliver Pendlebury sent over a deep corner, Kevin Lokko nodded it back, and Hisham Kasimu headed down and just over the line.

Looking for a response, Amadou Kassarate went on a strong run, but his shot was blocked wide.

Taylor Maloney delivered the corner, but Jamie Sendles-White could not find the target. Kassarate then played a one-two with Maloney only to fire well over.

After the break, McKenzie-Lyle saved a low shot from Jordan Norvelle-Williams before Welling made their first change, bringing on Yaser Kasim for Antony Papadopoulos. Kasim was immediately into the action but shanked his effort into the park.

Holmes fired across the face of goal with nobody able to apply the finishing touch before McKenzie-Lyle did well to tip over a Pendlebury free kick.

Warren Feeney then introduced new loan signing Daniel Nkrumah to replace Medy Elito. He was an on-looker when Pendlebury was invited to try his luck again with a free kick, however this timed he fired over.

Saied hit a cross-shot that was kept out by a combination of McKenzie-Lyle’s fingertips and the bar before Welling stunned the visitors with a leveller.

Kasim shot from fully thirty-five yards, and it was too hot for Jack Turner to handle allowing Payne to steal in and finish.

Chi Ezennolim had a shot saved by Turner before Welling had a great chance to go ahead.

Kassarate crossed deep, Maloney nodded back and Payne met it with a close-range header that he was unable to keep down.

Parry headed wide after a Maloney free kick was knocked on and a low Ezennolim cross flew across the face of goal, so it was a little against the run of play when Farnborough scored the winner deep into injury time.

The Welling defence had to scramble a clearance, and it fell to Pendlebury who smashed it home from the edge of the penalty area.

Feeney’s team are at home to Taunton Town on Saturday knowing that they need to start picking up a win or two or they will be looking anxiously over their shoulders.
