Welling United 1-2 Charlton Athletic

Patrick Casey scored a late brace as Charlton Athletic’s Under 21 side came from behind to win at Welling United in the London Senior Cup.

It had looked as though the Wings were going to progress until Casey scored twice in just over a minute to turn the game on its head.

In the early stages Josiah Bridgeman fired a free kick over for Welling before Charlton’s Toby Bower tested Javarn Pitterson with a near post shot.

The Wings’ goalkeeper was again in action shortly after when tipping over Kai Enslin’s diving header then Ralfi Hand sliced a shot wide when well placed.

Dominic Odusanya had a shot deflected wide for Welling before they went ahead. Josh Johnson caught Hand in possession and burst through before slotting past Prince Adegoke.

Will Wood skied a shot into Danson Park before the first half came to a close.

Jeremy Santos tested Pitterson with a long range shot that he got down well to save and then gathered as it threatened to squirm away before Bridgeman had a low shot saved at the other end. Enoch Muwonge then fired into the side netting.

After a string of substitutions disrupted the flow of the game Matt Dench’s daisy-cutter drew another good save out of Pitterson. Henry Rylah then burst through and fired a low shot towards the near post and again the Welling goalkeeper saved.

It came back out to Rylah but before he could get his shot away, Wood intervened with an excellent last ditch tackle.

Pitterson made another outstanding save when tipping over Dench’s free kick before Adegoke got in on the act with a great save from Mbunya Alemanji. Bridgeman created another opportunity for Alemanji whose shot was deflected wide.

Substitute Micah Mbick came even closer to levelling when his powerful drive was tipped by Pitterson onto the bar and out.

Eleven minutes remained when the Addicks drew level. Hand found Casey and he fired just inside the far post from the edge of the area.

Adegoke made a stunning save to stop Alemanji from restoring Welling’s lead and Charlton went straight up to the other end to go ahead. Tolu Ladapo eased in and pulled it back to Casey who finished in style.

As Welling searched for an equaliser, the visitors did not look unduly troubled and might have scored again but Pitterson was equal to Bower’s low drive.

Seven minutes of stoppage time were played before the referee brought the proceedings to a close with Charlton progressing to play Barking in the third round.
