Welling United 1-1 Slough Town

Both clubs kept their FA Cup hopes alive when Isthmian League Premier Division Welling United drew with National League South Slough Town.

Visitors Slough scored in first half injury time whilst the Wings had to wait until stoppage time in the second period before equalising, which was the least that they deserved.

Johnny Goddard had the first shot of the match for the Rebels, a low effort that was saved easily by Freddie Norman, before Ruben Shakpoke had a drive deflected wide at the other end. Jack Paxman picked out Logan Dobbs with the resulting corner but he headed well over.

Paxman was again involved when delivering a deep diagonal free kick to Scott Simmons who couldn’t keep his header down before another corner fell to him and he tried to catch out Adam Desbois with a back-heel, however, the Slough goalkeeper wasn’t tricked and made a comfortable save.

Scott Davies, Slough’s player manager, launched a free kick well over before Shakpoke was too strong for Tyrese Dyce and, having got into a good position, was caught in two minds between shooting and squaring to Tom Leahy and did neither. Dyce did not recover and had to be replaced.

Shakpoke’s power again allowed him to get beyond his man, this time he shrugged off Davies, and he cut along the bye-line before his shot from a tight angle came back out off the base of the post.

At the other end Dan Roth headed forward from a corner and Jaiden Drakes-Thomas got on the end of it but nodded wide before the visitors went ahead in the third minute of first half time added on. Goddard delivered a free kick that looked as if it had taken a deflection to fall for Peter Ojemen who hooked it home.

Joshua Adepoju pressed Welling’s defence into an error and he broke away before firing high and wide of the near post before new signing Zac Hambury came on for his Wings’ debut along with John Ufuah.

The latter was quickly in action with a shot that took a deflection which wrong-footed Debois, however, it also took the venom out of the effort and the Slough goalkeeper was able to re-adjust to make the save. Ufuah then picked out Shakpoke with a cross but his first time volley lacked power and Debois saved easily.

Shakpoke got behind for a one-on-one with Debois and the goalkeeper made an excellent stop with his foot. It came out to Hambury whose follow up was blocked off the line by Davies. As they continued to push, Welling had a big appeal for a handball in the penalty area ignored before Slough had an opportunity with another free kick that Davies thumped well over.

Goddard had a shot blocked bravely by Dobbs and he then delivered a free kick that was headed over by Wiktor Makowski.

Ufuah had a shot that was saved easily before he had a more powerful effort that must have swerved late as Desbois struggled to beat it out.

In the third minute of additional time Hambury was brought down by Roth in the penalty area and, after the fuss had died down, Paxman slotted it home from the spot.

Not content with settling for the draw, James Dyer shot wide for the Wings, however, Slough had a chance to win it themselves when awarded a free kick on the edge of the area. Davies went for placement rather than power and ended floating it straight into the arms of Norman.

On Tuesday night, the teams meet again in Berkshire after which the victors will progress to the third qualifying round.
