Welling United 1-1 Charlton Athletic (2-4 pens)

In a break from league football a young Welling United team hosted a youthful Charlton Athletic side in a tight London Senior Cup tie that was decided on penalties.

Jacob Roddy chipped just beyond the far post for the Addicks before Welling’s pressing almost paid dividends when Antony Papadopoulos charged down Nathan Harness’s clearance and it rebounded just wide of the post.

Kyrell Lisbie then went on a long run, shaking off several challenges, before his shot was deflected wide. At the other end a long clearance sent Daniel Kanu away but his attempt to fire back across goal was off target.

Papadopoulos collected a pass from Cameron Andrews and shot on the turn only for Harness to make an excellent save at the expense of a corner.

Jeremy Santaos got on the end of a quick break and crossed to an unmarked Euan Williams who could only head wide. Santaos then shot beyond the far post, and he was again in action soon after when crossing for Nazir Bakin whose header was off target.

A goalmouth scramble fell kindly for Kanu but his stabbed shot was well saved by Welling goalkeeper Javarn Pitterson.

Amadou Kassarate had the last effort of the first half for the Wings, a long range shot saved by Harness.

Lisbie thought that he had put Welling away five minutes after the break but Oliver Godziemski had strayed offside in the build up before Charlton’s Jason Adigun skimmed a shot wide.

Twenty second half minutes had passed when the visitors went ahead. Welling struggled to clear and Bakin looped a header that went in off the far post.

Enoch Muwonge replaced Abel Vendrells-Parcerisa and had an immediate chance. Although he didn’t strike it has cleanly as he would have hoped, it still required a goal-line clearance by the Addicks’ Nathan Assimwe to maintain Charlton’s lead.

Adigun had a shot turned round the post by Pitterson, then Matt Dench shot over as Charlton looked to close the game out.

However, it was not all one way and Papadopoulos shot wide after being found by Thomas Osel.

Four minutes remained when Papadopoulos levelled. Osel passed to Godziemski whose played in Papadopoulos to fire home via the far post.

Donald Macauley might have won it for the Wings when his clever flick over the Charlton defence allowed him a chance but he was at full stretch as he stabbed it beyond the far post meaning that the tie went to penalties.

Each team scored two of their first three before Charlton scored and Welling missed. That gave Adigun the opportunity to give the visitors an unassailable lead and he fired home confidently to send his team into the third round.
