Welling United 0-4 Charlton Athletic

Heavy and persistent rain on Saturday morning put doubts in the minds of some, that the game at Welling would go ahead.

Thankfully, the rain had stopped by kick-off time and the fans could concentrate on events on the field rather than speculate on behind-the-scenes activities.

Chris Powell eased his squad back into match action by fielding a completely different team in each half. With Johnnie Jackson not appearing until after the break, Matt Taylor took the captain’s armband when the teams came out.

Welling were lively in the opening period and matched their visitors. Ian Cooper blew for half-time with the sides locked at 0-0.

The Addicks moved up a gear after the interval when Chris Powell changed the team’s shape. Wagstaff and Jackson flanked Dale Stephens, who controlled the game, in midfield. Up front, Michael Smith was the focal point with Danny Haynes to his right and new boy, Jordan Cook, on his left.

It took just four minutes for the visitors to take the lead. A cross from Chris Solly was badly sliced by Joe Obersteller and the ball crept across the line.

Five minutes later Charlton doubled their advantage when a left-wing corner from Dale Stephens was headed in by Michael Smith.

It was now largely one way traffic and the Addicks added a third after 78 minutes. A terrific through ball from Dale Stephens found Danny Haynes who was brought down in the box by Franks. Johnnie Jackson converted the resultant penalty with his usual aplomb.

The Addicks rounded off a 4-0 win four minutes from time. A Jackson shot was turned behind for a corner. Stephens completed a hat-trick of assists when his corner was nodded home by Danny Haynes.

Powell’s team will jet off to Spain in good spirits on Monday.
