There was confusion at the end of the Isthmian League Premier Division match between Welling United and Aveley.

Ninety-seven minutes had been played when the Park View Road floodlights at the road end failed. There were still thirty seconds remaining so, with no expectancy of the matter being resolved quickly, referee Stuart Smith abandoned the match.
George Saunders asked a lot of questions of the Welling defence early on. He delivered a free kick that was headed over by Alejandro Machado before he flashed a shot wide after a corner was knocked down to him.
Tobi Tinubu then picked out Jaden Brissett who shot into the ground causing it to loop up and Welling goalkeeper Freddie Norman had to tip it over.
John Ufuah burst through for the Wings. Aveley goalkeeper Joe Wright, and two defenders, were indecisive in clearing it. Ufuah stuck out a foot and prodded it away before colliding with the custodian. The referee awarded a free kick to Aveley, however, he could easily have given it the other way.
Machado had a shot blocked before Gorge Penn went on a good run for Welling but failed to get enough band on his shot to curl it inside the post.
Ruben Shakpoke and Ufuah exchanged passes before the latter burst down the wing and fired in a low cross. It was cleared unconvincingly into the path of James Dyer whose first time shot flew inches wide.
Trying to play out from the back almost cost Welling when Saunders nicked it away and shot beyond the far post before two long range Dyer efforts flew over with half time approaching.

Almost immediately after the restart the dead-lock was broken. Saunders got on the wrong side of Scott Simmons and when they both went down, a penalty was awarded. Ollie Peters took the responsibility and gave Norman no chance.
Wright did well to hold a low driven cross by Shakpoke before a good move by the Millers presented Jayden Robinson with a great chance from twelve yards however, he lacked conviction with his shot when hitting it straight at Norman.
Brisset drew a good save out of the Welling goalkeeper when they again got caught out playing from the back, then Jack Paxman fired a free kick over at the other end. Paxman was again in action soon after when playing Greg Cundle in down the right hand side but he tried to beat Wright at the near post when squaring it might have been the better option. The Aveley goalkeeper then held on to it for too long and under the new laws this season, a corner was awarded.
As Welling threw players forward, they twice got caught on the counter. First Elliott Sartorius sent former Wing Rowan Liburd away but Norman was out quickly to smother at his feet. Then Liburd put Saunders through and his powerful drive was saved brilliantly by Welling’s custodian.
Well into injury time, Welling came desperately close to levelling when Dyer slung in a free kick and Lekan Majoyegbe, arriving late, fired just over. Then, with Wright wasting more time, the lights went out.

Now, the two clubs will have to wait for the league to decide if the result will stand, or whether the game will need to be replayed.
