Welling United 0-0 Eastleigh
Welling United 0-0 Eastleigh

With an F.A. Cup first round place at stake, Welling United and Eastleigh cancelled each other out and will have to do it all again on Tuesday night.

Although no goals, there were talking points, not least a big penalty call for Welling when Anthony Cook went down in the penalty area but nothing was given.

Wings’ manager Mark Goldberg changed his regular formation and it seemed to surprise Eastleigh who will be by far the happier team with the result.

Jack Jebb started for the first time this season and gave Cook the chance to drive across the face of goal but Bradley Goldberg couldn’t reach it to touch home.

Tyrone Barnett had a chance but rushed his flick and Dan Wilks was not troubled in collecting it.

Barnett then headed wide from a Jack Payne long throw before having a shot blocked after good work by Scott Rendell.

Sanchez Ming then caused problems with an incisive run and Max Stryjek made an excellent stop and when it eventually found its way to Danny Waldren, Stryjek again came to Eastleigh’s rescue with another good save.

Soon after, Stryjek was at it again when saving Anderson’s firm downward header from Ming’s cross before Anderson almost picked out the late arriving Adam Coombes but he couldn’t get the all important final touch.

Just as they had in the first period, Eastleigh created a few opportunities and Barnett headed wide from Payne’s corner before Danny Hollands hooked a volley over.

However, Welling were soon creating openings of their own and Waldren appeared to lose his bearings when getting a clean header on a Jebb corner but sending it well wide.

Rob Swaine then slung in a long ball that Coombes wasn’t quite able to reach then Eastleigh had a similar half chance when Andrew Boyce’s ball in just evaded Hollands.

Then came the big moment when Cook went on a long run and as he burst into the box he was clipped and fell. The referee, who was in a good position turned down Welling’s penalty appeals but didn’t caution the flying winger either.

Coombes had a low drive well saved after good work by Jebb then Cook shot well wide following more intelligent play by Jebb.

Cav Miley fired just beyond the far post before Welling had another less obvious shout for a penalty  when Coombes went down as he awaited a cross.

There was one last hope for Welling when Goldberg broke away but he was forced wide and shot into the defender.
