Welling Town vs AFC Greenwich Borough – Preview

Football under the floodlights takes place at Erith Leisure Centre on Wednesday evening when Welling Town host AFC Greenwich Borough in the Southern Counties East Football League First Division.

Neither side played on Saturday as it was FA Vase weekend. Welling had already been knocked out at Wick whilst newly formed Greenwich were not involved this season.

As is the case for many clubs that play football at an athletics stadium, Kevin Oakes’ team were not able to play a home game during August. They won the one game that they have hosted this month when Jedd Smith scored a first half brace in their two-nil victory over Lydd Town. In their last outing the Boots were defeated two-nil at Tooting Bec.

It has been a tremendous start to the first ever season for Reece Parara’s Greenwich. They drew their first game at home to Chessington and Hook United before winning their next seven to lead the table by three points after eight games. Their most recent game was away to Lordswood where they had to be very patient before claiming the three points in a two-nil win. Stefan Payne put them ahead with five minutes remaining and Oghosa Williams added a second deep into stoppage time.

As it’s the Borough’s first ever season, the two clubs have never met before so there will be no grudges or ill feelings between them to take into account. However, the visitors will probably start as favourites and the Boots will be looking to dent their opponents’ early season form.
