Welling Town v AFC Croydon Athletic preview

It would appear that a midweek South East Counties Football League Premier Division match between Welling Town and AFC Croydon Athletic will be the last in the league in the near future.

There seems to be little chance that there will be any football below National Leagues level for the next month as a result of the national Covid-19 lock-down.

The Boots made an excellent start to the season with four consecutive wins, all on the road, followed by a creditable draw at high flying Tunbridge Wells. However, since then they have suffered six defeats on the spin, plus an F.A. Vase six-one defeat at home to Hanworth Villa on Saturday.

Visitors AFC Croydon Athletic have had a mixed start to the season as well, having won three, drawn two and lost seven with their last three games all losses. Their most recent defeat was a four-two loss to Corinthian.

When the Rams visited Bayliss Avenue back in February, they won two-nil to complete a league double over Welling having won the first fixture by the only goal.

Despite their poor form, Kevin Oakes’ Boots still have one of the league’s leading scorers in their ranks with the experienced Ryan Golding having found the net ten times so far, four fewer than the Croydon based team have notched.

Both teams have suffered injury woes this season, but neither manager will be looking at that as the reason for the current disappointing runs. With the two sides suffering low confidence, it may be the team who makes the fewest errors that claims the points.
