Watt eyeing up a cup run
Watt eyeing up a cup run

Faversham Town boss Steve Watt has a personal relationship with the FA Cup as he takes his side to face Bedfont in the Preliminary Round of this year’s competition.

Watt has been talking to KSN ahead of tomorrow’s trip as they head to face the Combined Counties League side eyeing a place in the First Qualifying Round.

“Four points from six after two league games is the start is a good start. Would have preferred it to be six from six – we got a significant reaction on Tuesday against Deal after we dropped points at Sevenoaks on Saturday!

“We weren’t quite right with ourselves, and we did not do what we’ve been doing in pre-season; credit to Sevenoaks for doing a job on us but last night was a much more accomplished performance that I expect from us and we got our rewards.

“First two games and four points for a brand-new team, of course we’re happy with it,” Watt admitted.

Faversham beat Corinthian Casuals in the previous round and Watt has asked his side to continue their good form into the cup and hopefully have a good run in the competitions.

“We’re coming to the stage of the season now where the fixtures get “interrupted” with cup and trophy matches in the next few weeks. Cup runs are always nice for the club, and we will try to do well in both competitions as well as making sure that we are all fit and ready for the league games to follow.

“I say to my teams every year, “could we be the team that has THE cup run this season?” We always say as well that there is always someone in each round that goes out and shouldn’t and we have to be careful that that isn’t us either!”

“Cup runs are brilliant,” the Faversham boss went on, “Its brilliant if you like a different type of pressure, and there’s a different type of excitement for the fans… when the draw comes out on a Monday, you are never quite sure on who you are going to get!”

“I have also been lucky as a player to go quite far in the cups. When I was last time a manager at Hythe we went a long way in the trophy, it’s always exciting – I remember sitting there at Hythe waiting for the draw when we got drawn at home to Chorley which was an exciting time and is something that you want to generate all of the time.

“You want to create memories for the club and memories for players, for fans, memories for the club and often cup runs can do that! The league is obviously a big pressure for everyone so the cup run is a nice distraction, and you can build momentum in the cups as well.”

“We know Bedfont are a good side. They beat Glebe very comfortably in the last round – we’ve had a couple of videos to watch, it won’t be easy as all as I’m sure it will be a very difficult pitch, we will go a give them the utmost respect as we would do in any game and go and try to win the game and be in the hat come Monday!”

“One of my first experiences of the cup was playing for Chelsea in the Third Round and so the FA Cup for me holds a special place in my heart – it was my debut for Chelsea, it was at Stamford Bridge against a lower league club in the sort of game that was a banana skin.

“The competition is one that I am fond of definitely, we had a good run with Maidstone too. When you’re at a football club all you want to do is leave memories and things to talk about in years to come and during that period with Maidstone that success we had in the cup, it’s still talked about today and that’s is what we want to create at this club – memories that are when I am long gone and the players are long gone, the fans will still be talking about our time having a beer in their local talking about when we did this or that for Faversham Town.”
