Walsall 2-2 Bromley
Walsall 2-2 Bromley

Bromley picked up their eighth draw of their debut League Two season with a hard fought point away at second place Walsall, although they could have had all three points, but for conceding another injury time equaliser.

Manager Andy Woodman brought back Corey Whitely and Olufela Olomola for the game, playing with two up front and the usual back five and it was his side that made a positive start to the game.

Karmarl Grant’s long throws proved to be a real attacking asset all game and put The Saddlers under pressure along with a series of set pieces into the box.

Byron Webster & Matt clashed off the all at one of the dead balls and the Bromley captain required lengthy treatment afterwards, the incident unseen by the referee.

Walsall’s first chance fell to Lowe who broke clear one on one with Grant Smith, but the Bromley custodian made the vital save with his feet.

The Ravens continued to press the home side though and Olomola fired over after good work by Michael Cheek and Whitely, before Cheek then went close from a Grant long throw.

The Saddlers rallied from there, Allen fired over and Barrett had a shot deflected wide. With the game opening up Olomola struck the inside of the post from just inside the area and the striker was then denied by a great saving tackle from Daniels as he broke into the area.

With Bromley pushing forward they were caught out late in the half though, when a Walsall break upfield from a corner saw Gordon race clear and despite the best efforts of Danny Imray he crashed the ball past Smith to put the home side 1-0 up at the break.

The second half stated with Bromley looking positive again, Omar Sowunmi had a header saved from a corner and they drew level minutes later when Ben Thompson’s shot from a Grant throw deflected into Cheek’s path and the striker buried his chance to make it 1-1 his tenth goal for the season so far.

Walsall then had another strong spell of pressure, former Bromley loanee Stirk shot over from range, but The Ravens dug in deep and put their bodies on the line to keep the home side out.

With Woodman changing the shape of the team for the final fifteen minutes, Bromley took the lead when a long ball upfield was helped on by Jude Arthurs and Cheek into the path of Imray who surged clear of the home defence and drove the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle to put The Ravens 2-1 up.

From there Bromley sat deeper and deeper looking to dig in and hold on and they almost managed it, but in the final minute of injury time they conceded a corner and once again let in a scrambled equaliser.

The corner catching Bromley flat footed, falling to Okagbue whose shot from six yards out deflected into the net off Jellis to make it 2-2 on the final whistle.

The point takes Bromley up to nineteenth in the table ahead of their FA Cup second round game at Solihull Moors on Sunday afternoon.
