Walmer and Kingsdown GC to stage 2018 Fightmaster Cup

Walmer & Kingsdown Golf Club has been chosen to stage next year’s Fightmaster Cup between Europe and the USA.

The Ryder Cup-style contest for golfers who have lost the use of an arm will take place at the East Kent clifftop course from September 20-22.

The competition, which alternates every two years between the USA and Europe, began in 2008 and was named after Don Fightmaster, a leading one armed American golfer who inspired numerous young disabled people to take up the game.

The European 12-man team seems certain to include Walmer & Kingsdown member Rob Paul, who won the Society of One Armed Golfers world title last year, and fellow W&K member Neil Branston, who has been instrumental in securing the event, said: “This is a huge honour for Walmer & Kingsdown and it will be a proud moment for our own former world champion, Rob Paul, to be able to represent Europe on his home course.”

Club chairman Jim Williamson added: “Our club has a fantastic reputation for giving all visitors a warm welcome and we know that these international golfers will have a memorable competition on our marvellous course.

“We have already started planning to ensure that all of the players from the USA and around Europe, plus those who travel with them, return home with fond memories of their time spent at our iconic clifftop location with its spectacular scenery.”
